What Is Blind Embossing?
High-quality, individually embossed labels stand out from the crowd. Compared to conventionally printed labels without finishing, embossed labels impress not only with their elegant, unobtrusive look but also with their special feel.
Blind embossing is distinguished by the fact that it only partially deforms the label material. This means that it creates visual highlights without the use of additional film or colour. Therefore, the process is also known as “colourless embossing”. But of course, an area on your roll labels with colourful printing can also be finished with blind embossing. In this case, the minimalist charm and the 3D effect of traditional blind embossing are reduced. However, this creates a new, special effect that can be quite useful and aesthetic depending on the case.
Blind embossing is used to create sophisticated details in a noble and filigree way. This creates a visual and tactile effect. Blind embossing cannot be selected in the online calculator. If you are interested, please contact us by phone at +44 (0) 203 588 1080 or by email at info@label.co.uk.
How Does Blind Embossing Work?
When labels are embossed, a deformation is created on the surface of the label at the desired points. This is done using a tool as well as heat and pressure.
At label.co.uk, your embossed labels are created by elevating certain areas and giving them a tangible contour. We distinguish between embossing (raised elements) and debossing (recessed elements). We don’t offer debossing for our labels.
The intensity of the embossing depends on the material density and the type of embossing tool. Most of our label materials, whether textured or smooth, can be combined with blind embossing.

Labels with Blind Embossing: Correct Print Files
When it comes to correct print files, there are a number of things to bear in mind especially when hot foil stamping is involved. Of course, our artwork service team will be happy to take care of this for you! Your print data will be created or adapted depending on which package you select. We distinguish between the Smart and the Professional package.
While planning out your labels, please note that elements and fonts on your roll labels that are to be embossed with blind embossing must have a minimum line width of 0.4 mm, and blank spaces between embossed elements must have a minimum line width of 0.6 mm.

Would you like to create the print data for your labels with blind embossing yourself? Please feel free to use the following tools as a guide:
Production, Pressure and Embossed Area
Blind embossing is done using a special tool, heat, and pressure. The same tool can be used multiple times and allows for a deformation of the label material at the location you desire. At label.co.uk, a magnesium tool is used as a standard. However, on request you can choose between a magnesium and a brass tool.
During the application of the tool, production-related fluctuations occur. In some cases, the embossed elements are not placed 100% in the desired position. Furthermore, the pressure affects the appearance of the embossing on your roll label with blind embossing. Larger elements require more pressure than smaller elements. This can lead to deviating results if an embossing tool contains small and large elements. Therefore, we recommend having several tools made in these cases. This way, each element can be embossed with the ideal pressure according to its size. The size of the embossing area is also limited: larger areas can cause indentations, which reduces the raised effect.
We will be happy to advise you on this, of course! We also recommend our proof print, which you can have produced on request. This way, you can be sure that your label with blind embossing looks as planned.
Magnesium or Brass?
If you decide on labels with blind embossing, you should choose the right tool.
A magnesium tool is cost-effective in the short term and produces sharp edges. By comparison, the brass tool is considered a more expensive alternative and is recommended for delicate embossed elements. In addition, a brass tool lasts longer, can be reused more often and is therefore more cost-effective and resource-efficient in the long term.

Hot Foil and Relief Embossing as an Addition or Alternative
Of course, your label can have a different finish than blind embossing – or even combine several finishes! As already explained, blind embossing is a partial deformation on the label.
If you decide on hot foil stamping as an alternative heat, pressure, and a tool are used to apply foil (without partial deformation) to certain areas. Furthermore, you can also refine your label with relief embossing. It is a combination of blind embossing and hot foil stamping: selected areas of the label are not only deformed, but also finished with a foil at the same time.

Extra Protection for Your Labels
Finishes with protective purposes include film lamination and protective varnish. Protective varnish gives your label a higher-quality surface and protects it against abrasion. The properties of the protective varnish should match the material of your label. With film lamination, on the other hand, a transparent film is applied to the label as an addition, instead of a varnish.
Due to the characteristic deformation that blind embossing has, the additional application of a protective film is not possible. Therefore, blind embossing cannot be combined with film lamination. In this case, we always recommend protective varnish.
