Printing Metallic Labels & Stickers on Rolls
As a premium label printer we offer to produce metallic labels for brands and businesses of all shapes and sizes in three main ways, using either hot foil stamping, metallic substrates or silver electro-inks. Each of the three methods can produce very different results, we recommend requesting a sample book and reviewing each method via finished label samples. In addition, here’s a quick overview on each of the processes we use to create metallic labels.
Hot Foil Stamping
Hot foil stamping is the most premium and traditional refinement we offer when considering metallic labels. Hot foil stamping is predominantly used by premium brands in order to create a luxurious looking label at the point of sale. Think wine, cosmetics and luxury food products in jars and bottles. Applying hot foil to custom labels is a stamping process, not a printing process and therefore a little more expensive. The reasons are additional tooling, which is required and must be manufactured, as well as additional machine set-up and set-down costs. You can calculate costs for labels with hot foil directly on our website using our online calculator. That being said, as a premium label printing company, we offer hot foil stamping as a standard process. In addition to the gold and silver hot foils shown in the calculator, we can offer you numerous other hot foil colours in matt or glossy. Simply send us an enquiry by email. We will then send you an offer shortly.
Simulation: Use of Metallic Materials
If you are a brand or business with many SKUs then it makes sense to utilise digital label printing. So long as the label size across these SKUs remains the same, we can combine all labels in one single print run. In order to create metallic labels and stickers using the digital printing process, we take a metallic substrate such as a metallic coated paper or a silver-coloured PP film and print label designs using the CMYK colour mode. What this essentially means is that we are using the metallic properties of the facestock material (silver) and printing colours (such as yellow) over the top in order to simulate gold colours. Looking for a metallic red? Not a problem, we simply print a red colour on a metallic substrate.
HP Indigo Silver Electro-Inks
A relatively new development: In addition to the standard CMYK cylinders we use in our machines, we also have space for additional colours known as “spot colours.” In the past this used to exclusively be “HPI-White ink” – think white print on transparent, clear labels. As digital label printing continues to advance, we now have the opportunity to offer a silver spot colour. We can utilise this silver electro-ink in a similar fashion to the aforementioned metallic substrates. Why not combine a silver spot colour with red to produce a metallic red print? The possibilities are endless.
