PPWR Explained: Recommendations for Contract Manufacturers, Producers and Distributors

We’re Ready for the PPWR. Are You?

From 12 August, the European Union will begin implementing the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). As things stand, implementation is set to take place without any transition periods. There is an urgent need for action.

So don’t waste any time in preparing your products–and, above all, their packaging–for the new requirements.

What you need to do now:

  • Obtain information along the supply chain
  • Structure and organise relevant data
  • Ensure and confirm the compliance of packaging and packaged products

PPWR from August: These Are Your Responsibilities

If you are a contract manufacturer–that is, if you manufacture packaging or packaged products on behalf of other companies–you are obliged to document all technical data relating to the packaging. You must then make these documents available to your customers.

A producer is defined as anyone who produces packaging or has it produced. If this applies to you, it is your responsibility to request data sheets containing technical details on PPWR compliance from your suppliers or contract manufacturers. Using these data sheets, you must ensure that all parties involved in your supply chain comply with the PPWR regulations. You should therefore request all relevant information and use it to draw up your declaration of conformity.

Distributors are those who place packaging or packaged products on the market. It is their duty to ensure the conformity of the packaging. They obtain the necessary information and documents for this from the manufacturers.

These Are the Measures We Take in Relation to the PPWR

As a label printing company, we fulfil the role of supplier as defined by the PPWR guidelines. This means it is our duty to obtain declarations of conformity for all components of label printing, finishing and dispatch.

We are happy to pass this information on to you so that you can independently verify the conformity of your product labels.

As compliance can depend heavily on material combinations, further processing and finishing treatments, we may need to provide you with a large volume of documentation. To reliably verify the compliance of your labels, you will indeed need all of this information.

Tools That Do the Work for You

There are several companies and associations that specialise in providing guidance on the PPWR. Many of these organisations have developed software designed to help you make your products PPWR-compliant.

Two such organisations are Tilisco and R-Cycle. Together, the two companies have developed the Compliance Compass. This is a tool that uses AI to calculate a compliance score, identify gaps in supplier data and generate technical data sheets and declarations of conformity with a single click.
If you’d like to find out more about the Compass or request a personalised demo, simply get in touch with the experts at R-Cycle. (unpaid promotion)

Packaging specialist Packmatic also offers a similar tool. The company has developed a software called Packa. It collects, processes and analyses all key information and data relating to PPWR compliance.
Here, too, the software not only assesses the compliance of your products, but also allows you to send enquiries to suppliers directly via the programme or keep an eye on price trends for materials. (unpaid advertisement)

Alternatively, you can use the PPWR Readiness Assessment from PPWR Connect. Simply provide some information about your company, products and SKUs to receive a simplified PPWR compliance score. (unpaid advertising)

Further information

This blog post has focused heavily on the urgent need for action. If you’d like to explore the topic of the PPWR in greater depth, we recommend an article we published earlier this year. There you’ll find the key information on the PPWR and the measures that are to be implemented up to and including 2030.
