Label Shapes and Their Uses
Which label is used depends primarily on the product to be labelled. The following factors play a role:
- industry
- application
- product requirements
- information to be displayed
- visual appearence
For example, seal labels are commonly used on food products such as honey and preserves, while many premium wine and sparkling wine bottles feature an additional neck label. Depending on the product, several different label types may be used together.

Overview of Label Types:
1. Front Label
The front label, often referred to as the main label, is applied to the front of the product and is usually the most visible element of the packaging.
It typically displays the brand logo, product name and key marketing messages. As it is often the first thing customers notice, the front label plays a crucial role in attracting attention and encouraging purchase decisions.
2. Back Label
The back label is applied to the rear of the product and generally contains practical information such as ingredients, nutritional values, usage instructions, manufacturer details or a barcode. Its primary purpose is to provide essential information and support the purchasing decision by giving customers a clearer understanding of the product.
Tip: Front and back labels can often be produced together as alternating labels on the same roll, helping to simplify application and reduce production costs.
3. Lid label
A lid label is applied directly to the lid or cap of a product. It can be used to display branding, product identification or promotional elements, while also enhancing the overall appearance of the packaging. Lid labels are particularly popular on jars, tubs and cosmetic containers.
4. Seal Label
A seal label, also known as freshness seal, combines a product label with a sealing strip that extends across the lid or opening.
Seal labels are widely used in the food, beverage and cosmetics industries, where product integrity and freshness are important. They provide visible evidence if a package has been opened while also offering additional space for branding and product information.

5. Neck Label
Neck labels are commonly used on wine, spirits, sparkling wine and other bottled products. Applied around the neck of the bottle, they complement the main label and are often used to highlight awards, special editions, vintage information or premium product features.
6. Wrap-Around Label
Wrap-around labels encircle all or most of a product’s surface and are commonly used on bottles, jars, cans and containers.
They provide a large printable area for branding, product information and regulatory content, making them an excellent choice when more space is required.
