E-Label: The Future of Wine Labelling

A new EU regulation that will revolutionise the labelling of wine and wine-based beverages has come into effect on 8th of December 2023. There are two ways of implementation for this endeavour: classic and electronic. In both cases, information on allergens and the nutritional value must be printed on the label.

The Classic Way:

Your information is placed on the label in printed form, including a table with nutrition declaration and ingredients list.

The Electronic Solution (E-Label):

Here, the mandatory information is provided via a QR code on the label. These digital labels offer many advantages, such as more space for creative design and the possibility of reducing the label size.

What Are the Disadvantages of the Electronic Way?

• Not everyone has a smartphone or tablet with access to the internet.
• Internet access is not always guaranteed everywhere.

Steps of Implementation

1. Know values or have them determined: To fulfil the new requirements, you need to know or have the relevant values determined for your wine labels.
2. QR code or not: Decide whether you want to choose the electronic route with a QR code. If so, contact your website administrator or use one of the well-known platform providers. Otherwise, the information must be printed directly on the label. Information on allergens and nutritional values must be printed on the label in both options.
3. Label design: Due to the additional information, changes to the design are necessary. 4. Coordination with the relevant authorities: You are responsible for the accuracy of the information on your labels. Therefore, we recommend coordination with the relevant authorities. It is best to submit the design to them in advance by e-mail or post.
