Waterproof Labels; Does Your Brand Truly Require Waterproof Labels?

From time to time brand and business owners can place too much emphasis on the term “waterproof.” Often, issues can be resolved when we consider the properties of water-resistant labels when compared to waterproof labels and stickers. In doing so, in terms of production at least, many materials and finishing options remain open to brand owners, graphic designers and label printing companies such as ourselves.

Waterproof Labels on Rolls; Custom Printed

Where waterproof labels and stickers on rolls are truly required then one is generally limited to a material called polypropylene (PP). This is a polymeric material (sometimes referred to as “vinyl labels”) that will absorb no water; so much so that we can refer to this material as waterproof. Our customers may require waterproof labels due to certain filling and logistics processes, taking beer labels as an example (bottle sterilisation, filling and rinsing) or where the label is designed to be used in an external environment. Please be aware that our waterproof labels are not designed to be submerged for extended periods of time or used in a marine environment. Read more about vinyl labels here.

Does Adding a Film Lamination make Labels Waterproof?

One could argue that adding film lamination to a paper label would make it waterproof. However, in reality and most cases this makes little sense. If one were to place a matt film lamination over a beautifully textured paper, only the effect created by the lamination would ever be seen and felt. There would also likely be trapped air between the textured paper and lamination thus production air bubbles. As the lamination will always provide the final finish and aesthetic; one may as well use it alongside a polypropylene film to ensure a waterproof result.

Is it Possible to Create Paper Labels that are Waterproof?

As a label manufacturer who work with many premium brands we understand that there is often a requirement for matt papers to hold up in a commercial environment; filling, logistics, retail. Do these custom printed labels on rolls have to be truly waterproof? Oftentimes, product labels are only required to be water resistant and not waterproof. We recommend that all printed labels we produce feature a UV protective varnish; this lacquer, alongside it’s UV protective qualities “seals” the custom label. In effect the paper material absorbs the lacquer, saturating it to a certain extent and thus reducing the likelihood of the label absorbing enough water for the label to start to perish.

Waterproof Label & Sticker Materials: Important Information

We always recommend that decision makers test a range of materials, particularly in the environment in which they are intended to be used. For this reason, we have created a complimentary Sample Book service; test our materials and review our print.

Water Resistant vs Waterproof

We print all custom labels digitally using HP Indigo 6800 technology. This is a commercial grade printing technology using electro-inks; these will not run under any circumstance. Nor will inks scratch away from the surface of the label when subjected to logistics processes.

In many cases, product labels do not need to be waterproof; oftentimes water resistant labels suffice. Many paper labels, armed with a full colour print and a protective varnish will cope with refrigeration and logistics processes. This leaves many possibilities open to professional label users in terms of material selection and branding.

Waterproof labelling, across many industries, is generally printed on polymeric materials such as polypropylene. Polypropylene is completely waterproof and will withstand wet filling processes as well as refrigeration processes.

Whether we produce labels either to be water resistant or waterproof, a permanent adhesive will be used as standard. Standard, permanent adhesive plays no role as to whether the label is waterproof or not. We do offer other specialist adhesives; please contact our Customer Service team for more information.
